Surfing was declared an official sport of California

The governor signed the law yesterday. Sports generate $6.000 billion annually in that state.


Surfing was declared an official sport of California by Governor Jerry Brown yesterday when he signed the bill promoting this, the World Surf League on its siteThe legislation came to the governor's attention via the state Assembly's Unofficial Surfing Caucus and was first introduced in January 2018.

Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi, a surfer and co-author of the bill, said: “There is no better way to represent California than surfing. I am excited that we are celebrating an iconic sport.” He also posted on his personal Twitter: “Surfing in California has a rich history and culture. It attracts people from all over the world and generates over $6 billion in annual retail sales for the state.”

“I am proud to join Assembly Member Muratsuchi in designating surfing as our state sport,” said fellow Assembly Member, co-author and surfer Ian Calderon when the bill was introduced. “Growing up surfing not only had a significant impact on who I am as a person, but it also taught me at an early age to appreciate our beautiful coastline that we are so fortunate to have here in California.”
