Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi, a surfer and co-author of the bill, said: “There is no better way to represent California than surfing. I am excited that we are celebrating an iconic sport.” He also posted on his personal Twitter: “Surfing in California has a rich history and culture. “I am proud to join Assembly Member Muratsuchi in designating surfing as our state sport,” said fellow Assembly Member, co-author and surfer Ian Calderon when the bill was introduced. “Growing up surfing not only had a significant impact on who I am as a person, but it also taught me at an early age to appreciate our beautiful coastline that we are so fortunate to have here in California.”
