Eleven Latinos to watch out for at the World Surfing Games

Sharpened begins its campaign in this year's World Cup

In a few hours, a new edition of the ISA World Surfing Games will begin in Tahara. History will be written once again, with the added bonus that this time the results could put two men and two women in the Pan American Games.

These are 11 Latinos to watch out for.

Santiago Muniz

He is a small wave specialist and is eager to return after being out of the water for a while due to injury. He has been improving his performances until he reached the podium last week at the QS 1500 in Morocco. He knows how to compete in these long events, having won in 2014, and he wants to equal his compatriot Lele Usuna, who was the only one to have won it twice.

Alonso Correa

He is young and always has a lot of courage, but even more so when he has to be accountable in front of his flag and his teammates. He has come up the ranks in the tour and although he stands out in heavy seas, he has a good game in small waves. He was left wanting in that youth world championship in Azores 2016 and he does not want that to happen again.

Oli Camarena

The ability of this Panamanian knows no bounds, he needs to find the chances to prove it. This is a big one, and the Japanese beach breaks are an ideal place for him to do so. If he focuses and manages to be consistent, he can surprise.

Jairo perez

The truth is that Jairo is unstoppable in small waves, and if he gets inspired, he can knock out the favourites of any tour. Last year in Biarritz he won several heats against the best. This year he has to get his revenge.

Manuel Selman

He is a talent of the purest kind. His style is so impeccable that the judges cannot see that what he has just done is a stunt, because it is easy for him to do what for others is an epic feat, “effortless” as the Americans call it. If he gets his act together and motivates himself, he can win the championship.

Dylan Southworth

Dylan Southworth's surfing doesn't do justice to the results he gets in international events. If he could put it all into one event, like his friend Jhony Corzo did last year, he could be among the best.

Mimi Barona

There is a scent that Barona is going to be world champion. This year she has won what she wanted and in Japan she has the advantage of traveling with her family and friends; when Mimi is comfortable, she is unstoppable. She is motivated because a good position in this tournament would give her the pass to Lima 2019 and she knows that a step like that will be highly recognized in her country. Mimi is technical and heart, when she combines the two things, no one stops her.

Daniella Rosas

Last year, Daniella Rosas was among the top 10 in the world in this event, and a few months later, at the junior world championships held in Japan, she was one step away from the medals. She is traveling with two former world champions, Analí Gómez and Sofía Mulanovich, who will guide her on the right path. The talent is there, the support is there, she just needs to make it happen.

Josefina Ane

He is having the best year of his life in the QS, winning a race, getting two second places and competing in an event he knows well. He is with his friends and a strong technical team. The forecast, which shows strong waves for the first few days and small waves for the last few days, suits the versatility of his surfing.

Anali Gomez

The truth is that if she manages to combine all the elements, Analí's surfing will not be stopped by anyone and will lead her to become world champion once again. She already went down that path in 2014 and she can perfectly do it again. The waves that will break in the first few days will play in her favor and against her that she will get small later on.

Sofia Mulanovich

The value of intelligence, competitive maturity and technique. Sofia is not going to go out doing aerials on every wave, she is going to surf wisely and it is possible that she will end up being among the top 10 of the event, at least. It seems incredible that 14 years after her first title, she is more eager than before. Be very careful with Queen Mulanovich.
