The IOC lifted sanctions against Russian athletes

It is hoped that the ISA will do the same and that, consequently, the country will participate again in the world championships.

The International Olympic Committee lifted the ban on Russian athletes participating in the Olympic Games, The Inertia website reported yesterday.

The change in the penalty was announced by the committee chair, Kirsty Coventry, former ISA VP, who stated: “We wanted to ensure that all athletes had the opportunity to compete in the Olympic Games and were not held responsible for the actions of their governments.”

The authority maintained its stance on the war, continuing to support Ukraine and condemn Russian actions.

The IOC's decision is expected to be passed on to the ISA, and therefore surfers from that country will be able to return to competitions, which this year, in November, in Peru, begin their Olympic qualifiers.

Russian surfer Sergey Rasshivaev told The Inertia that they will send a letter to the ISA pleading for the acceptance of Russians into their events again.

The last time Russia competed in an ISA World Championship was in El Salvador in 2021.
