The Stand Up Paddle and Paddleboard World Championships will take place between November 23 and December 2 in the waters of Wanning, China, the International Surfing Association (ISA) announced today in a press release.

For the first time in history, the event will see the youth category compete with a technical race for men and women.

It was previously announced that the event would take place in Buzios, Brazil, but as explained in the press release, the organizers failed to fulfill the contract and therefore the event was withdrawn from them. Thus, the ISA will land in China for the second time this year (the world longboard championship was held in January).

“We are delighted to be returning to Riyue Bay and working with our partners at the Wanning People’s Government of Hainan Province for what is sure to be a record-breaking edition of the ISA World SUP and Paddleboard Championship,” said ISA President Fernando Aguerre. “2018 will be a major step in the global growth of SUP because it will be the first year the event is held in Asia,” he added.
