The ISA World Longboard Championships will be held in France in May

The waves of Biarritz were chosen for the test

The ISA has just announced that the 2019 longboard world championship will be held on the waves of Biarritz, on the French Basque coast, between May 26 and June 2, before the start of summer in the northern hemisphere.

The event is of special importance because it will serve to determine the last qualifiers in the longboard category for Lima 2019 (two places, the highest ranking, for American countries are assigned in this tournament).

Each participating national team will be made up of two men and two women.

"Biarritz has played a historic role in the development of surfing in France, as well as Europe in general. Considered the birthplace of European surfing in 1957, the long, gentle waves of the Côte des Basques have made it an iconic location for longboarding and it has hosted numerous longboard competitions over the years," says the ISA statement, which details that 71 athletes from 22 countries participated in the previous edition of the event.

“We are delighted to see France continue to demonstrate its commitment and enthusiasm for the global development of all forms of surfing by hosting this ISA World Longboard Surfing Championship,” said ISA President Fernando Aguerre. “Biarritz/Côte des Basques is an amazing location for the sport of Surfing, so we are pleased to see the leadership of this city stepping up once again to host a premier ISA event. We look forward to celebrating the style and grace of longboard surfing in one of the sport’s classic destinations.”

Meanwhile, ISA Executive Committee regular member and President of the French Surfing Federation, Jean-Luc Arassus, said: "The French Surfing Federation sees Longboarding as one of the emblematic disciplines of surfing with a rich history and culture, so it is a pleasure to carry out the proposal to host the world championship in France. This event has additional importance with the qualifying spots for the ANOC World Beach Games 2019 and the Pan American Games 2019."
