The ISA has accepted two applications for the universality slot, its president announced
“One for a woman and one for a man. We will announce them at the end of this event,” said Fernando Aguerre in the live broadcast of the ISA World Championships; will it be Bryan Pérez and Candelaria Resano?
The International Surfing Association received five applications for the Olympic universality slot and two were accepted, its president, Fernando Aguerre, reported today in the live broadcast of the ISA World Surfing Games that are being held in Puerto Rico.
Asked about the issue by commentator Chris Coté, the authority said: “We received five applications, three were not considered acceptable and two were, one for a woman and one for a man. We will announce them at the end of this event.”
“If the surfer who is a candidate for the universality slot - we have one man and one woman as candidates - if they end up qualifying on their own, then we don't need universality and the universality spot goes to the next person in line,” he added.
As DUKE has learned and previously reported (click here.), Bryan Pérez from El Salvador and Candelaria Resano from Nicaragua applied for the slot and met all the requirements to obtain the slot.
The ISA did not report who the applicants were, but it did say that there were applicants.
Aguerre provided more details today during his live appearance.
Also in the detail of the date of disclosure of the news, it was understood that this was going to be reported one or two weeks after this World Cup had ended.
Of the top 50 in the event, only Lucy Jarrad of American Samoa remains as a possible eligible for the slot (the only country left that was in Toko 2020 with up to eight athletes). It is unknown if she applied for the universal slot and the only question is whether it is her or Resano.
For Bryan Pérez the path seems to be clear, although he could very well be one of the three who were rejected for reasons that are unknown at this point.
Considering that both of them fulfilled all the steps to be eligible for the universal slot and were even part of the ISA camp in Teahupoo
The chances of Bryan Pérez and Candelaria Resano receiving the slot, taking into account this information, are intact.
