The Rest of the World team won the inaugural Founders' Cup
Smith, Bourez, Igarashi, Buitendag, Hareb and they gave the surprise and took the cup
It wasn't the favourites from Brazil, Australia or the United States who won the first-ever event in Slater's pool, it was the Rest of the World squad of Jordy Smith of South Africa, Michel Bourez of Tahiti, Kanoa Igarashi of Japan, Paige Hareb of New Zealand and Bianca Buitendag of South Africa.
The team format event was set up much like an ISA, with each wave counting for the results of the squad rather than the individual.
Thus, in the final, which also included Brazil and the United States, Bourez started the first series in second place, Buitendag maintained his solidity with another second, Igarashi won hers and then in the doubles, Paige Hareb was not up to par, but Jordy Smith was, after piping deep and making an alley oop, he won the most important series and the title.
Slater had his chance to get past Smith but fell on his final alley oop.
Final result
1st: Rest of the World: 8 points
2nd: Brazil: 7 points
3rd: United States: 4 points
