The Rumble at the Ranch makes this a great Sunday amid the pandemic
The return of competitive surfing would have been better in Padang Padang, or in JBay, or in GLand, but being able to see the best after all this time is presented as a feast in the middle of so much darkness.
The return of live WSL surfing could have been at Pipe or JBay or Padang Padang, and it would have been better, but the controlled environment of Slater's pool is known to be more in line with the controls required by the Covid-19 pandemic than the aforementioned beaches.
As repetitive as the pool is and as much as surfers insist on surfing it in a fairly conventional way (with very few exceptions), a live surfing event in the midst of this boring pandemic, these quarantines, a global economic crisis makes this Sunday much more attractive in terms of entertainment.
The format of the championship seems quite boring, let's say that placing teams instead of beating each other up eight against eight seems more friendly and it is going to be done that way. As if it were another joke tournament.
Although we know that competitive beasts like Kelly and Filipe, to name two, are going to want to win at all costs.
It will be a Sunday more like before, live surfing, the company of Joe Turpel, Chris Coté on commentary, the expectation that something interesting related to surfing could happen makes it at least interesting.
Despite all the drawbacks, we will enjoy the return of live WSL surfing, with some of the best in the world, in the pool of the legendary Kelly.
