The Spanish surfing team trains in Morocco for the world championship in El Salvador

They believe that the similarity of waves between the African and Central American nations is key for their eight athletes to arrive better prepared for the largest ISA tournament in history.

Aritz Aramburu, Jonathan González, Andy Criere, Gony Zubizarreta, Garazi Sánchez, Nadia Erostarbe, Letizia Canales and Ariane Ochoa are in Agadir, Morocco, training for the ISA World Surfing Games that will take place in El Salvador between May 29 and June 6, the Spanish surfing federation reported on its website.

Trained by Pablo Solar and Ibon Amatriain, they chose the African country because of the similarity of the waves to those of El Salvador.

“We did not come to Morocco to train earlier because the situation did not allow it. From the first minute we knew that we wanted to prepare for the most important event in recent years for the Spanish Surfing Federation in a setting like the one we will find there,” said Luis Pérez, coach of the national team.

In Agadir, as in El Salvador, several perfect right-hand pointbreaks are lined up.

The federation announced that the next stop for the Spanish team will be the World Cup venue in El Tunco, El Salvador, where the eight will be reduced to six, since the maximum quota is three men and three women per country.

The World Championships in El Salvador will qualify seven men and five men for Tokyo 2021.
