The United States started with an advantage

While the rest of the teams are in the Olympic village, Team USA has already been surfing for four days, staying 300 kilometers from the Japanese capital.

The United States has been surfing for four days ahead of the rest of the teams.

The logistics and power of each nation vis-a-vis the IOC, the organizing committees and other interested parties have always been key in the development of the Olympic Games and this seems to have not escaped the debut of Olympic surfing.

While on social media you can even see the favourites - Italo Ferreira and Gabriel Medina away from the waves, as well as all the European and Latin athletes - the United States has already been training in the water for four days.

First it was in the pool and now it is in the small waves of Makinohara, a small town 275 kilometers west of Tsurigasaki Beach.

In some ways, the anti-Covid rules that designate certain places as permitted to basically be in Japan are being applied differently for the USA Surfing Team.

And it's working out well for them: Kolohe posted a solid clip in minimal waves (despite the fact that the sea is going to rise), John John continues to improve his knee and Carissa and Caroline are consolidating themselves as the favorites that they already were.

While it is true that none of this determines the champion, it is a stark contrast to see all the surfers playing ping pong in the Olympic village and a single team under the sun and in the waves.

It seems that the US Olympic Committee understood that surfing is not the same as athletics or Olympic gymnastics; it understood that different waves and getting used to them is key to winning medals.
