The WSL announced equal pay for gender in some of its events

The change includes the CT, the big wave tour, the longboard tour and the junior world championship, but the QS and Pro Junior stages will remain with differences.

The World Surf League announced that starting in 2019, CT, Big Wave Tour, Longboard Circuit and Junior World Championship events will have equal payouts for men and women.

Achieving equality in QS events and the pro-youth circuit is left out, marked as a “future task”. Months ago there was a huge controversy because in a youth event in South Africa the men won twice as much as the women. On the other hand, the Mavericks event could not have been held if equality was not established as established by the government of the state of California.

Until this year, the women's CT events awarded $65.000 to the winner and the men's CT events awarded $100.000 to the winner; now the champions will receive the same amount.

Meanwhile, female QS event champions earn between 40 and 60% of what a man earns and this will remain the same. For example, Ryan Callinan won $25.000 at the QS 6000 in Japan, Caroline Marks won $10.000 at the QS 14.000 in Cabo San Lucas and Coco Ho won $XNUMX at the Pantín event a few days ago.

In its statement, the WSL celebrated the event, noting that it became the first global organization based in the United States to achieve this.

"This change is simply the right thing for the WSL," said WSL CEO Sophie Goldschmidt. "We want to be at the forefront when it comes to driving equality in all walks of life, starting with the waves."

Slater, Gilmore and Commissioner Perrow all welcomed the move, noting the important message the WSL sends to the rest of sports, the legacy it leaves for future generations and how the organization has always been an innovator in the world of sport.
