WSL announces 2022 longboard tour
Three stages, in Manly, Huntington and Malibu, will determine the world champions; 20 men and 20 women will compete per event; Garrido-Lecca may be guaranteed
The 2022 World Longboard Tour has just been announced by the World Surf League and will include three stages, in Manly Beach, Huntington Beach and Malibu, the organization reported in a statement.
The two best results of each athlete will be added up from these three stages to determine the world ranking. The first two will be worth 5000 points and the third 10.000.
The exact dates are as follows:
-Manly Beach, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia: May 16-24
-Vans Duct Tape Invitational, Huntington Beach, California, USA: August 3 to 7
-WSL Longboard Championships, Malibu, California, USA: October 3-13.
According to the release, the top 10 from last year's rankings will compete in the event, along with seven regional qualifiers, one WSL wildcard and two local wildcards.
As the current champion, Joel Tudor, has been suspended, it is presumed that Peruvian Lucas Garrido Lecca would be entering the events.
The news comes after the WSL had a few hectic weeks with Tudor himself criticizing the organization's actions to the point that he ended up being suspended.
After the news was released, Tudor posted a text on his Instagram in which he highlighted that he and Vans (his main sponsor) had agreed that the second stage would be valid for the tour; the traditional Duct Tape Invitational.
