WSL will not apply rule 171.11 due to Medina and Ibelli situation

The World Surf League will not take action against the situation that arose in the series between Gabriel Medina and Caio Ibelli last Thursday at Pipeline, Hawaii, the organization reported to DUKE.

After Medina committed interference on the nets for no reason, rule 171.11 of the WSL book was circulated, which states that if the commissioner considers that an interference was serious unsportsmanlike conduct, a surfer can lose the points of his best event of the tour and that the series in question can be resurfed, and that he can also be suspended for an event or for an entire circuit.

WSL Commissioner Pat O'Connell said: “The Competition and Circuit Office and the Director of Discipline reviewed the situation regarding Rule 171.11 and determined that while Medina’s interference was ‘intentional’ – he said so on the webcast – it was not ‘unsportsmanlike’ or of a ‘serious’ nature. His conduct was deemed to be within the scope of the game and did not pose a safety risk to any of the competitors.”
