Lack of bank in Reñaca forced suspension of national event in Chile
Locals accuse a private individual of damaging the formation of the wave with a mechanical shovel
The Chilean Surf Federation's stage was suspended this past weekend in Reñaca, the Chilean Surf Federation reported in a statement.
According to reports, the waves breaking dry on the sand posed a danger to competitors and also did not provide an opportunity for surfing.
Before the national competition began, a local wave enthusiast wrote to DUKE saying that the wave had disappeared and that there was no bench because the sandy bottom of the beach had been bulldozed.
Images of the machine moving sand on the shore were shared on social media by several surfers.
The federation's statement details: We would like to address our community of surfers and fans to clarify the recent suspension of the "Reñaca Surf Pro" event. This decision, taken jointly by the event organizers and the board of directors of the Chilean Surfing Federation (FECHSURF), was based on an exhaustive evaluation of the sea conditions (waves breaking "dry" on the shore, due to the absence of a sandbank, a condition never seen before) that represented a considerable risk to the integrity of our competitors, as well as a very limited performance potential and therefore a great difficulty for their qualification.
From the beginning, FECHSURF supported the concern for safety, aware of the importance of preserving the health and performance of our athletes for future competitions, both national and international.
This was not a decision taken lightly, but the result of detailed analysis and consultation with professional and experienced surfers, the technical team and the competitors themselves, who broadly supported the decisions taken.
Yes, there were some surfable waves during the 4 days, but we reiterate that the wave always broke on dry sand.”
The Reñaca wave has always been extremely consistent, and several national and international competitions have been held on that beach.
