Round 1 for men and women took place today, totaling 12 25-minute heats that went into the water and determined the top 16 men and the top eight women.

10 Argentines, four Brazilians, one Chilean and one Uruguayan made it to the round of 16, while four Argentines, three Peruvians and one Brazilian advanced to the women's quarterfinals.

Another of the big surprises of the day was the elimination of a member of the Argentine surfing team, Coco Ciaciarulo.
