What happened on the historic day in twenty images

Special coverage presented by Capi Bar

The historic third WSL finals took place yesterday at Lower Trestles, crowning Griffin Colapinto and Caroline Marks in a Lowers packed with people and expectations.

Carissa's dreams faded once more and Filipe's shone once more.

Below is a selection of the best photos taken yesterday by the official WSL photographers: Thiago Diz, Cait Myers, Pat Nolan and Kenny Morris.

Ethan Ewing took corner surfing to the next level, and yesterday's turns were some of the best ever.
Caitlin Simmers' rebelliousness put her ahead of Molly Picklum in the first round of the day, but she was then unable to beat Caroline Marks.
Carissa would be a seven-time world champion if this format had not been invented.
Victim of ever-increasing pressure, he fell in this, his first wave in the finals.
She tried to do this aerial, and came close to completing it, but didn't. The Hawaiian didn't show her form and was clearly a victim of the pressure.
For the second year in a row, Carissa left Lowers as the best in the ranking but without winning the title.
The 21-year-old from Florida is the new world champion.
Finding the good ones and attacking Occy-style, Caroline's strategy to win.
Starting to celebrate. He said that there was going to be a party and that everyone was invited.
Ewing's thing is from another planet.
The Australian was out of the water just over a month ago, on a stretcher going to the hospital with two broken vertebrae, and yesterday he almost snatched the title from Filipe.
The Australian pushed edge surfing to an incredible level.
Griffin's band was left wanting... The locals couldn't handle Ethan's inspired performance.
There was a whole beach ready to celebrate with the Californian, but it didn't happen and he finished the year in third place.
Colapinto needed to differentiate himself from Ewing by doing aerials, but he chose not to go airborne.
There would be more Brazilians than Californians in Lowers... It's probable.
"É campeao, é campeao", sings the Brazilian band.
Filipe did fly and that was key for the judges to differentiate, especially after the memo they sent during the week indicating that they were going to score that more.
Griffin carving.
Robinson couldn't beat Chianca.
In this wave Chianca received more than 8 points and it was the key wave to get into round 2.
Lowers was perfect. Slow at times, but it was a good course to watch maneuvers. But it is time to say goodbye to Lowers and hopefully, to the finals.
