The breakwater construction project endangers the Pelluhue wave.
They intend for it to be located exactly on the breaker
The perfect left-hand break at Los Botes de Pelluhue is in danger due to the possible construction of a breakwater, local surfers reported on the Instagram account @espigoncl.
"I have received preliminary information regarding the construction of the breakwater at Los Botes Pelluhue Beach. The project is well advanced, so much so that a citizen participation event will take place on July 8," the first post reads.
And then they explain in other publications that the fishermen in the area have lost beach and can't work, and that's why they're asking for the breakwater. The big problem is that they want to build it right where the waves break.
The president of the Chilean surfing federation, Matías López, expressed his "great concern" and explained that Pelluhue is a wave that has already generated several generations of surfers, is a recreational center, and has also generated economic activity.
"It's very important that fishermen and surfers reach agreements about the spaces they share," he added.
The case is being handled by the local municipality.
From @espigoncl they explain: “This conflict isn't between surfing and fishing. It's about how we think about development. Can there be a solution that doesn't sacrifice the irretrievable? Is it fair that a $4.000 billion project is being built without an environmental impact study, right in an area of tourist interest? Today more than ever, Pelluhue needs dialogue, a long-term perspective, and far-sighted decisions. Protecting the wave isn't about going against artisanal fishing. It's about demanding fair, sustainable, and transparent development.”
