The day when those who are not afraid felt fear

Mavericks was huge the day before yesterday, Sunday, January 10. Giant to Matrix levels, to levels that scare those who are not scared (see Kai Lenny's video).

And, being true to life and honest about surfing, the best big riders on the planet were almost unable to handle the beast. In the morning live broadcast made by Jamie Mitchell, Twiggy Baker himself was shown dropping into the tail of the wave and the whole band, Lucas Chumbo and Kai Lenny included, waiting for him to calm down a bit on the boat.

The beasts broke and no one surfed them on the peak... Those who are not afraid, were afraid.

In doubt, they went into the tow-in water and there came the biggest wave of the day: Peter Mel, again, on a bomb of about 70 feet. A tube from the young Luca Padua also came out and he is showing his attitude on his wave.

Looking back at the images, Manny Resano was one of the few who truly honored the swell, he took on a sick wave and cured it with the surfing it required (note here).

Yes, Twiggy Baker said he was overconfident, but he didn't complete his drop on what seems to have been the biggest bomb of his paddle. Meanwhile, what seemed to have been the best wave of the day for the well-received Lucas Chumbo was ultimately a drop but again, on the shoulder of the wave.

Legendary wave photographer Frank Quirarte explained in one of his posts that the reason so few paddle-out waves were seen is that all the energy of the swell was concentrated in the bowl and that made the waves so difficult to ride.

Mavericks proved that when the time comes to put their eggs on the table, there is no one who can truly tame them. And in the end, the same cannot be said of Nazaré or Peahi.
