Editorial of the week: What I would ask Filipe Toledo

And some notes on life and surfing

Last week I wrote that I didn't want to talk about Filipe anymore, but the man didn't make it easy for me. A few hours after that editorial, the man announced that he was withdrawing from the WSL tour for the rest of the season. He's tired, he's not depressed, and now he's controversial, saying that he doesn't read comments on social media and that before entering the water at Pipe he had already decided not to surf on this year's circuit.

Oh Filipe! It would be nice to be able to interview the man and have him speak freely about these issues. Without structures, a Latin interview, without corrections or American dramas.

What a shame he blocked me! What a shame he'll probably never give me that interview!

I would ask him:

-If you had already made the decision not to compete in the tour before going into the water, why didn't you communicate it before and leave the spot for someone else?

-Why didn't you say you were tired of the tour and that's why you left the championship?

-Did your stomach hurt? What did you poison yourself with?

-Do you admit that you find heavy lefts difficult on reef bottoms?

-Why don't you hire someone at Pipe to help you, like Italo did with Shane Dorian and Adriano did with Jamie O'Brien?

-Have you noticed that your performance has worsened in that condition? Do you remember the Pipe Masters that Kelly coached you in and when you made a couple of tube hits at Pipe?

-What plans do you have for training for the Olympic Games in Teahupoo?

-Why do you say you don't read social media when at the same time your father and your wife are begging people not to talk bad about you on social media because these comments affect your mental health?

Well… Those are some questions I would like to ask, or, some answers I would like to get.

I've just finished filming a new episode of Conversations on the Island, this time about big waves with Pepe Gomez, a guy from the middle of the country who wanted to surf big waves and didn't stop until he did. A crazy story that will soon be seen on DUKE.

The WSL stage is coming up in Bikini, Uruguay, and I'm excited about that, and as I said last week, I'm a little bored of missing it, but I'm also excited to go to Arecibo, Puerto Rico, where this year's World Surfing Games are taking place.

Don't stop, don't stop and try to make this dream last forever.
