The feelings of five Argentines regarding the imminent return of surfing to Mar del Plata

This is how Lele Usuna, Luchy Cosoleto, Nacho Gundensen, Josefina Ané and Surfiel Gil imagine their first encounter with water after 70 desperately dry days

Whoever wants to make life difficult for a surfer, just don't let him surf and see what happens. The volume of suffering, boredom and many other related problems has been increasing among surfers during this quarantine in the many countries where they were not allowed to go into the water.

More than 70 days of one of the best times of the year in the South Atlantic seem to be coming to an end, according to information provided to DUKE by the authorities of the Argentine Surfing Association. All that remains is the signature and the seal of the authorities.

Whole swells, tubes, left without being surfed but all this seems to be starting to be part of the past in Mar del Plata.

In this context, we asked five of the city's leading surfers what they imagine themselves doing when they get back into the water.

This is what they told us:

Usuna looked at him with a "please, let everything come out so we can go to the water" face. He himself said that "maybe the weekend will be free."

Lele Usuna: “It will be crazy to feel that energy again, to stand on the board and fly”

Here, the weekend is free. Everything has already been sent, they are evaluating, that is the next path that will be opened.

I imagine the return will be strange, different, something I've never experienced before because I've never really been out of the water for so long. It's going to be crazy to feel that energy again, to stand on the board and fly.

I think I'm going to get tired, I'm going to feel pain in my back, in my ribs, like those pains you get after surfing for hours, but I'll have those pains after surfing for a short time, just an hour, but oh well, I want to get back in the water.

I think that to celebrate my return, I'm going to get up really early and get into the water at first light, that's how I'm going to celebrate, getting up really early and being one of the first in the water.

Celebrating is not possible yet... Although, well, maybe after surfing, you see that surfing always brings you back... I love the feeling after surfing, maybe I have a beer here at home and think about how strange it was to surf after so long (laughs). I could celebrate that way too.

Lucía Cosoleto: “I will be very happy when they let me into the water!”

I'm going to be very happy when they let me in the water! Even if the waves aren't the best and it's cold, I'm going to get in the sea because I need to be there! I know that at first surfing is going to feel strange because I haven't stood on my board for two and a half months, but I'm going to take it slowly, positively and with a lot of desire.

I'm super motivated with all the work I've been doing during quarantine, so I'm ready to get back to my water training.

And I can't wait to compete again!

Josefina Ané: “I would like to be there”

I'm still here in Denmark. I'm really happy that surfing is coming back to Mar del Plata. I'd really like to be there, but today I have to be on this side. I decided to stay here in Denmark, take advantage of the heat, and next week I'm going north to Cold Hawaii, a point where there are some nice waves. So I'm going to start surfing there and start training for everything that's coming. I think that at any moment we'll return to normality, at least with a view to next year.

Nacho Gundensen: "I have a crack that I can't take anymore"

We have been 70 days without touching the sea, I think that quite a few people will go into the water, I hope in an appropriate way and respecting the protocols. And for my part, I am going to try to go little by little, “try” (laughs). I really want to surf!

I'm going to feel a lot of joy and release all that pent-up energy from trying new things in the water. I have a crack that I can't take anymore (laughs), that's for sure. On top of that, there were high waves, I hope it stays that way.

Surfiel Gil: “The man is happy. Where is the guy? In the water!”

“The man is happy. Where is the guy? In the water!” The return to the water will be “amazing”, with a lot of pent-up enthusiasm (laughs). Maybe to celebrate I will simply take some time out of each day to be thankful, and in the evening I will perhaps have a beer with my partner. Pure life!
