The first Central American to surf at Jaws was her: Polly Ralda from Guatemala

(At least until someone else proves otherwise)

DUKE posted yesterday, with a question mark, if Panamanian Ricky Chiari had become the first Central American surfer to surf Jaws, as he himself proclaimed in a post on his Instagram last Tuesday.

“I am grateful for all the help and support from friends and family, proud to be the first Central American to surf it,” Chiari wrote, posting photos of himself surfing the dreaded tow-in break.

A few hours later, Guatemalan Polly Kai Ralda wrote to DUKE claiming the honor, and rightly so. "I wanted to mention it, because it was a woman before a man," the big rider justified herself.

Ralda has not only surfed at Jaws more than once, but has also been invited to compete in one of the heaviest Jaws Challenges in history, in 2016. In her heat she scored two points and with a mere 0,34 more she made it to the grand final.

He has also participated in successful free surfing sessions (as seen in the photos) “before and after the event,” he told DUKE.

The young Guatemalan was one of the guests of Queen of the Bay, the female Eddie, lives on the North Shore and every time Waimea breaks, she is in the water. With the exception of these days, when she is nine months pregnant and is anxious to give birth to the baby and go back to riding giant waves.

She also recently graduated as a psychologist from the University of Hawaii.
