The first free surfing photos from the world championship

There were days of much action in El Pico and El Rastrial

Special coverage presented by the International Surfing Association - Photos by Sean Evans, Pablo Jimenez and Jersson Barboza

The build-up to the ISA World Cup is exciting, with hundreds of surfers heading out to the water every day to try out the waves at Pico and El Rastrial, which saw their size increase yesterday despite the fact that their shape deteriorated with the arrival of an onshore wind that blew all day.

Virtually all competitors took to the water and the entire day was a free surfing show.

These photos feature many members of the German, Barbadian, Spanish and Indonesian teams, among others.

The entrance and exit of Rastrial and El Pico is through that single place and it is equally challenging because the place is full of sea urchins. Just ask Lucía Machado and Janire González Etxebarri, who goes into the water with her pair of Crocs.
