The QS events held in Peru in the nineties marked an era. Looking for references about the history of the QS 3000 that is being held in Peru at this time, everyone refers to those championships as a significant precedent in the history of the sport in one of the most surfing countries in the world.
Six consecutive events were held in the 1994s between 1999 and 95 inclusive. The tournament started out as two stars, quickly moved up to three (96 and 97), then reached the top level of awards (four stars in 1998), dropping back to three stars in 1999 and closing its celebrated history with two in XNUMX.
According to what the DataSurfe site rescues from various Brazilian publications of the time such as Fluir and Trip, the first five editions were held in Punta Rocas and only the last one was in San Bartolo.
Five of the events held were won by Brazilians, the only one not won by the green and yellow was the 96 event won by Californian Keith Malloy.

The most famous presence was that of Tom Curren in 1999 and that of Andy Irons, in the tournament that had the most stars, that of 97, the Hawaiian who at that time was 19 years old finished fifth after failing in the semis against the American Hank Mills and the Australian Luke Hitchings. The result in Peru was one of those that qualified Irons to the CT for the first time.
The best result for a Peruvian was Roberto Mesa in the first edition of the event. He finished ninth overall, losing in the quarterfinals in third place, behind Victor Ribas and Armando Daltro.
Meanwhile, the most outstanding player in the history of the event was Makki Block, who also reached the quarterfinals (in 1999) but placed fourth in his series (13th overall) against Rodrigo Dornelles, Cristiano Guimaraes and Leo Neves. To advance to those quarterfinals, in the round of 94 the Peruvian beat none other than three-time champion Tom Curren, eliminating him from the event. Block was consistent and in 95, 97 and XNUMX he reached the round of XNUMX.
Other locals who appear to have reached the round of 16 in the event's history are Magoo de la Rosa, Cesar Aspillaga, Gustavo Reategui, Martín Jerí and Sebastián de Romaña.
The only other Latin American to appear on the list is Venezuelan Magnum Martínez, who reached the round of 1997 in the XNUMX edition.
That event was like holding in Punta Rocas what today would be a QS 6.000 or even a little more. At that time, the tournaments with the highest points were three primes that awarded 100.000 dollars; the one in Peru awarded 80.000 and was won by the Brazilian Peterson Rosa.
