Interview with the surfer who will be president of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou

He says he will surf while he is president, but with the restraint that his position deserves

Last Monday, December 2, five days after had been confirmed as President-elect of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou kept his word (in an unexpected phone call he made) and was interviewed by DUKE.

Entire teams of journalists were at the entrance of the headquarters, following what had happened during the day, no more and no less than the meeting with the outgoing president, Tabaré Vázquez, marking the beginning of the transition.

At the same time, the country's most important channels had already announced that Lacalle Pou would be live on their central newscasts, in which topics that marked and still mark the country's agenda (due to what happened at the aforementioned meeting) were later introduced.

In the midst of all this, at 17:58, three surfers, one a journalist, another an audiovisual producer and another a photographer were welcomed with open arms. A lady kindly invited the team in and told them to wait for "Luis" in some comfortable armchairs.

Going up the stairs, a relatively large meeting could be seen around a round table where Azucena Arbeleche (future Minister of Economy) and Pablo Bartol, among others, were sharing.

Basically, the future of the country was brewing at that very moment, at every level.

About three minutes later, the same man of the moment showed up and kindly began a conversation that had initially been scheduled to last 30 minutes and lasted 42. At 18:52 p.m., the president-elect left in a hurry but calmly for his rounds of national channels.

Lacalle Pou was extremely generous with a small surfing website at a key moment for the country, when it was perhaps more important to talk about something else. But, as can be seen in the interview, it gave the impression that he wanted to show his people this important facet of his life. Explain to the people he will preside over what it means to be a surfer, perhaps cross out stigmas, or maybe he just wanted to take some time in the middle of the hustle and bustle to talk about surfing.

The impression was that, as previously said, he is a real surfer, with years of experience in the water and with the codes and vocabulary that surfers use and that only they understand.

He is aware, however, that the task ahead of him is greater than the importance and the good that he will do in the water. "Shake off the sand and go to work," he told himself, although he explained that "obviously" he will surf as president.

This special also contains the keys to the interview, A photo gallery of him surfing at home and around the world and the transcription thereof.

The interview was conducted by Pablo Zanocchi, the video by Sebastián Bistiancic of Ancul Films and the photos were taken Agustin Martinez. The video features photos from Lacalle Pou's personal archive. The photos of El Pendorcho were taken by Federico Fernández - www.guiadesurfing.com
