Legendary Basque surfer Hugues Oyarzabal has passed away
Master of tubes, free surfer admired by the best, pioneer in slabs and in placing the GoPro where no one has ever done it before
Basque underground charger Hugues Oyarzabal, an outstanding tube rider, pioneer in achieving incredible angles with the GoPro and a slab explorer in the area, passed away a few days ago, reported several media outlets.
Oyarzabal was from Hendaye where he naturally made a career as a professional free surfer.
Being born in the mid-eighties, I wasn't the most common person in the world.
As Stab writes, the goofy footer was seen tubing in Mundaka or in the waves of Hossegor or taming waves never before surfed.
Over time he adopted Indonesia as his second home where he continued to show class on the poles.
In 2012 he won the first GoPro Award and it was Kelly Slater who presented him with the award in front of the world's best surfers at an event held in Hawaii.
In fact, YouTube surfer Borja Agote says that Jamie O'Brien himself asked him for advice on GoPro angles, later becoming a master of the subject.
In recent years, according to local site Surf30, he was dedicated to his daughter, Kalani: “Always with a smile on his face, he starred in several films, but without a doubt, his greatest achievement was transmitting his love for the sea to his daughter Kalani, his greatest passion in this life.”
