Longboarding will not be part of Los Angeles 2028
The IOC turned down the ISA's request on that and also on the request to increase the number of shortboarder spots.
Longboarding will not be part of the Olympic program for Los Angeles 2028, the ISA announced today in a press release reacting to the news and saying it is committed to continuing its pursuit of the sport for Brisbane 2032.
“The International Surfing Association (ISA) is disappointed by the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) decision not to include Longboard Surfing in the program for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.”
“The ISA appreciates the opportunity to showcase the value of longboarding as an Olympic discipline and is grateful for its consideration within the LA28 program. While our request for additional quotas for shortboard surfing was also rejected, we will continue to push for increased participation for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games,” the statement read.
So for LA 2028, nothing changes; there will be 24 male and 24 female shortboarders in Olympic surfing, just like in 2024.
“The ISA firmly believes in the value of longboarding and the growing global reach of our sport across its various disciplines. Longboarding's proven success at the past Pan American Games is a testament to its relevance, and we remain fully committed to the continued growth and development of this sport through our multiple World Championships,” they state.
“We are obviously disappointed to receive the news that longboarding will not be part of LA28 and that we will not secure more places for our athletes, but I believe we are still in the early stages of our long Olympic journey. We are proud of Surfing's contribution to the success of the Olympic Games, and we will continue to work hard to achieve longboarding's inclusion at the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games and beyond. We look forward to working closely with the IOC and the Brisbane Organizing Committee to highlight the value of our sport on the Olympic stage,” said ISA President Aguerre.
SUP had been rejected months ago and now the Longboard has been rejected.
