The most important events in Brazilian surfing in 2024 according to five specialists

The year analyzed in the world's greatest surfing power

The world's biggest surfing power has no world or Olympic champions in 2024 but it is still the biggest surfing power. Just to mention a number, the 2024 CT will start with 11 of the 34 CT surfers wearing the green and yellow.

That is to say, a third of the surfers who make it to the elite are from Brazil.

It is no less important that they were the country that brought the most surfers to the Olympic Games, achieving perfection with six out of six and taking home two medals.

But the opinions on what was most important vary depending on the specialist. It is true that the medals are repeated and also the achievements of women. But there are varied opinions and situations.

Ader Oliveira – AOS Mídia: Medals in Paris 2024

The most significant event in Brazilian surfing in 2024 took place at the Paris Olympics, with medals won by Tati Weston-Webb and Gabriel Medina. The performances of the two were incredible throughout the championship and gold was not far away.

Gabriel was incredibly unlucky with a lack of waves in the semi-final with Jack Robinson and Tati lost the women's decision by just 0,18.

Gabriel thrillingly earned an Olympic spot at the ISA Games in Puerto Rico and went viral around the world with an iconic image at Teahupoo.

Edinho Leite – WSL and Hardcore: National circuit, number of qualifiers, female surfing and the protection of breakers

I could say that having a structured and functioning national circuit again would be a great achievement, but I think that reaching the end of the year with 12 Brazilians classified in the elite of world surfing is what weighs the most, especially with the entry of Grogia, the only debutant in the elite.

Of course, there is the other side of the coin, when we see the lack of renewal...

I cannot confirm this, but one relevant fact was the increase in the presence of women in the sea. I find this very interesting, among other things because it is not only a reflection of the success of Brazilian women in the competition, since we only have Tati and Luana in the "Surf Special" as highlights.

Finally, the biggest achievement for national surfing was the fact that now the waves in Regência (ES) are protected by law, also becoming a National Surfing Reserve. Perhaps this can stop the attack on our beaches and surrounding areas. "There are currently similar projects in Brazil, such as the Pernambuco municipalities of Bonito and Paudalho, the first to recognize the Rights of Nature, in 2017 and 2018, respectively. The city of Florianópolis, in Santa Catarina, did the same in 2019. And more recently, in 2023, representatives of Chapada Diamantina, in Bahia, also presented a process to have legislation that recognizes the rights of the place." There are other places that follow the same path: the beaches of Francês, in Marechal Deodoro (AL), Itamambuca, in Ubatuba (SP), and Moçambique, in Florianópolis (SC), as well as the first National Reserves.

When we act to preserve waves, it is worth remembering that we are also ensuring that beaches continue to exist and change in harmony with nature. This can lead, as we have seen countless times, to the emergence of a sustainable and profitable economy.
Brazil tends to privatize what should be public, ending up with beaches and, of course, often with their waves.

Chico Padilha – Brazilian surfing specialist: Paris 2024 and improving the level of women’s surfing

In a year in which Tati and Medina won medals and Ítalo won at Teahuppo and the Maracaná of surfing, it was our representatives of the new generation who have reduced the distance with their global opponents in the challenger series. They still have a long way to go.

Diogo Mourao – Globo: Silver Tati and the prominence of female surfing

There are several, such as the large number of qualifiers for the CT, but I'll stick with Tati's silver medal. In a year marked by the growth of women's surfing, women were the protagonists of the CT, with some of the best performances and historic moments and a great evolution in recent years. I would say that it is more of a revolution. And the trend is for the level to rise even more.
