Sofia Mulanovich spoke in favor of the new qualification system for Los Angeles 2028, saying that "it helps ensure that all athletes have to compete at the highest level at each stage, avoiding situations that in the past generated controversy or different interpretations," among other things.
An Olympian at Tokyo 2020, two-time ISA World Champion, and WSL World Champion, she said: “There are many comments and opinions about Olympic qualification in surfing. It’s difficult to please everyone with changes like this, but I think the new system aims to be a more balanced alternative. As in previous editions of the Olympic Games, surfers still have the opportunity to qualify through both the WCT and the ISA/WSG World Championships.”
“Furthermore, the new format expands opportunities for countries, allowing more athletes to qualify than before, which is in line with the Olympic spirit of providing greater access without necessarily lowering the competitive level,” he added.
And she concluded: “As a fan of good surfing, I am convinced that in Los Angeles 2028 we will see the best surfers in the world in the water, qualified by different paths, but all with the level required to be in an Olympic Games.”
