El Salvador's president-elect proposed an initiative to promote surfing

Nayib Bukele will work with California Governor Gavin Newsom to make it happen

The young president-elect of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, proposed a project to boost tourism through surfing, the news network reported yesterday APTo make the Surf City initiative a reality, the politician will work with the governor of California, Gavin Newsom, with whom he met this week in El Salvador.

“We have the best surfing beaches in the world and they have the others,” Bukele told reporters after his meeting with Newsom. “So we want to work together,” he added. For his part, Newsom, after discussing the economic potential of the surf industry with local business owners, investors and the U.S. ambassador to El Salvador, Jean Manes, said: “There is no doubt that there are many things we can do together in this space.”

The governor also said that Visit California, an organization that is responsible for the development of tourism in the state, was interested in working with El Salvador.

In August 2018, California declared surfing its official sport.

According to several surf business owners, one of the problems is the treatment of wastewater. Last year the US government invested 3 million dollars in a project to develop the El Zonte coastal area. Hotels and a water treatment plant were built.
