The quarterfinals of the main event for women and men were defined on day 1 of surfing in Santiago 2023, which saw Lucca Mesinas making the best wave and the best score of the event adding 17,67 (9,5+8,17).

Among the women, the best performance was by Leilani McGonagle who beat Samanta Alonso with a score of 15,33 (7,83+7,5).

These eight male and eight female competitors are three steps away from guaranteeing at least one medal through the main event.

The rest will have to fight through the playoffs.

In shortboard there were several surfers with lower pre-qualifications who beat their rivals, such was the case of Estela López who beat Sol Aguirre who could not find waves, Sanoa Olin who beat Lucía Indurain, Oli González who beat Isauro Elizondo and Lolo Bellorin who did the same with Cody Young.
