The best bodyboarder in history, one of the best bodysurfers, one of the most legendary surfers in history shared several useful secrets about why he continues to surf so well, continues to look young, and remains healthy and fit at almost 63 years old.
The following is an excerpt from an interview with Stewart in which he addressed the topic:
The first thing is your desire to do something. That's where you begin. In my case, what I want is to keep surfing waves at a high level for as long as I can, so I have to check the boxes: I need to have an appropriate lifestyle, which means I'm hydrating properly, making sure I'm eating good, organic food that suits my metabolism, so I'm very mindful of what I'm eating all the time. I try to stay away from sugars and processed foods; that's very important.
Have a stretching routine and be disciplined to do it every day.
Having a really good exercise routine that you alternate regularly—I do it every other day—works really well for me.
But the most important thing is your desire to do it. So if you really want to do it, you need to find the information to achieve it. And then you make a plan and go for it.
I hope to reach (surfing until I'm 100 years old), I'm still re-establishing what I can and can't do, I finally gave up on making a paradigm, I'll just keep going, try to stay as fit as I can and continue enjoying life and the incredible experiences it gives you.
(He's surprised he can surf like that at 62) but I did set it as a goal when I was young. I wanted to keep doing it for as long as I could; maybe when I'm 60 I could win a big event, and I did it last year at Shark Island.
I've achieved so many great goals, but if you don't have a dream first, if you don't have a dream you can't set goals and without goals you have nowhere to go.
The concept of retirement is strange; I don't buy into that paradigm at all. Retirement, "you're too old to do one thing or too young to do another"... Brother, the universe is an open place, and it's up to us to explore it.
