The situation of the Paris 2024 tower and the supervision of the new good faith rule
Explained by the president of the ISA, Fernando Aguerre today at a press conference
“The tower is moving forward, it continues and it seems to be moving forward without any problems at the moment,” declared the president of the International Surfing Association, Fernando Aguerre, in a press conference today, when asked about the status of the construction of the infrastructure that will support the judges in the surfing of Paris 2024.
“We are waiting for the events to happen, the ISA has already taken a position on the matter; we thought that there were alternative technologies to using a tower, but well, the international federation is the one that organizes the competition and not the one that decides the infrastructure. That is decided by the host country; in this case it is Tahiti,” said Aguerre.
He then explained that this is public information: “There are reports from Tahiti to the International Olympic Committee and Paris 2024 on the progress of the tower.”
Asked about the historic rule of evaluating athletes' will to win their series in ISA World Championships, which will be implemented starting this World Championship, by which the "good faith" of surfers will be evaluated, Aguerre reported that the judges will be the people in charge of determining whether the rule was broken or not: "The technical team that oversees interference, priority, that defines what happens in the water, who will look for good sportsmanship and we believe that in surfing it is something very important."
“When you are in a competition you have to try to win, that is why you compete, otherwise you stay at home watching television. How do you evaluate good faith? I think that as in all things, the rules of good faith can be quickly interpreted, you can discover if a person surfs to win or not,” he said.
But, referring to this particular World Cup, he put it into perspective: “It is something that we are not going to have to investigate or apply because I believe that everyone wants to win, everyone wants to take home… There are prizes for the men's and women's teams that win,” he said, referring to the extra slot that the men's and women's team champions earn.
