Women's elite confirmed for 2019
Silvana Lima guaranteed her place and there will be a battle to enter Tokyo 2020. These are the qualifiers
The results were favorable for the Brazilian Silvana Lima, yesterday in an epic first day of the Maui Pro, the final stage of the women's world tour held in Honolua Bay.
All surfers who could have undone Coco Ho and Malia Manuel's double-qualifications and taken Lima's spot in the QS were eliminated from the event, guaranteeing Lima her place in the elite.
The only change that will take place based on the results of the day is that Australian Nikki Van Dijk, who was tenth in the rankings and was overtaken by Malia Manuel, will use her qualification through the QS.
So, regardless of the result on the final day in Maui, the 2019 tour is already guaranteed and will be comprised of:
Through CT:
Stephanie Gilmore (AUS)
Lakey Peterson (USA)
Tatiana Weston Webb (BRA)
Carissa Moore (USA)
Johanne Defay (FRA)
Caroline Marks (USA)
Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS)
Courtney Conlogue (USA)
Coco Ho (USA)
Malia Manuel (USA)
By means of QS:
Nikki Van Dijk (AUS)
Paige Hareb (NZL)
Bronte Macaulay (AUS)
Macy Callaghan (AUS)
Hennessy Breeze (CRI)
Silvana Lima (BRA)
With this, the quotas for the Olympic Games for nations with fewer athletes such as Costa Rica, will be fought over. In such a scenario, with these nations in the CT, there are nine possible qualifiers for Tokyo 2020 and eight quotas available:
With two surfers from the United States, two Australians, two Brazilians, one French, one Kiwi and one Costa Rican.
This is without having confirmed the wildcard of the year, which is expected to go to two-time world champion Tyler Wright, who suffers from chronic fatigue.
Finally, with this result, Sage Erickson and Keely Andrew were left out of the tour.
