These are the scenarios for the definition of the Argentine title 2019

When the Quiksilver La Paloma begins, there will be nine surfers fighting for the title, but it is a tight race between five of them who depend on themselves to be champions.

The Argentine surfing circuit will be defined when the red spot in the South Atlantic sends the waves for the legendary Quiksilver La Paloma, which this year will celebrate its 16th anniversary, once again ending the Argentine surfing circuit.

On April 23, the waiting period was opened and will run until May 23. When there are signs that the right-hander is going to work, the green light will be given for the event to take place.

Nine surfers have a mathematical chance of being champions, but there are five who do not depend on anyone to become champions.

Each of the scenarios calculated by DUKE for the definition are listed below:

-Nine surfers have mathematical chances of being Argentine champions this year: Leader Martín Passeri, Facundo and Mariano Arreyes, Brian Masmut, Marcelo Rodríguez, Felipe Suárez, Nicolás Hermida, Nazareno Pereyra and Juan Cruz Ruggiero.

-Although Passeri is the leader, there are five surfers who reach the La Paloma stage in a similar situation, without depending on anyone to be champions, meaning that if they win there the result of any other rival will not matter, the title will go to one of them. They are Passeri himself, the Arreyes brothers, Brian Masmut and Marcelo Rodríguez.

In any case, it is very important to stress that Passeri's slight advantage puts him one step ahead of the rest, making it necessary that in the event that none of them win, they will have to place themselves one step above the Argentine (if Passeri ninth, the rest need a fifth or better, if Passeri fifth, the rest need a third or better and so on – see detail below).

-Nicolás Hermida, Nazareno Pereyra and Juan Cruz Ruggiero can only become champions by winning, but also depending on whether the group of leaders formed by Passeri, the Arreyes brothers and Brian Masmut lose by one or almost one. With Passeri or the Arreyes brothers finishing ninth, the hopes of Hermida, Pereyra and Ruggiero disappear.

-Analyzing what is happening at the front, Martín Passeri rules out a 17th place and is already guaranteed 3370 points. If he loses at once, to overtake him the Arreyes brothers and Brian Masmut must be placed ninth or better, Marcelo Rodríguez fifth or better and Felipe Suárez third or better.

-If Passeri finishes ninth, he reaches 3470. In this scenario, Arreyes and Masmut must finish fifth or better, Rodríguez third or better and Felipe Suárez must make it to the grand final.

-If Passeri is placed fifth, the Arreyes and Masmut must be placed third or better and Marcelo Rodríguez  and Felipe Suárez reach the final.

-If Passeri finishes third, Arreyes, Masmut and Rodríguez should make it to the grand final and Felipe Suárez would have to win the championship.

-If Passeri makes it to the final, Arreyes, Masmut and Rodríguez must win and Felipe Suárez stays

-If Passeri loses by one, the Arreyes, Masmut and Rodriguez will start a neck-and-neck fight, needing one to be ahead of the others to be champion. That is, if for example one of the Arreyes is placed fifth, Masmut will need to be placed third. If Masmut is placed third, Rodriguez will need to be placed second.

-Felipe Suarez's case is a little different because he is in the middle between the leading group and the one below. His chances vanish if any of the four leaders make it to the final. Whereas if he were to make it to the grand final and face Marcelo Rodriguez, if he wins, he is the champion.

Suarez's chances are not nearly as remote as those of the group at the back of the pack.

Although there are five who do not depend on anyone, Passeri has a slight advantage that could be decisive in giving him a historic sixth Argentine championship title at the age of 43. All photos: Quiksilver Argentina
