The Punta Galea Challenge has just received the green light, its authorities reported, to take place this Saturday, December 6.
"As announced, the yellow alert issued on Monday has been upgraded to a green light," the statement reads. It adds: "We expect excellent conditions: light southwesterly winds, large, solid, and consistent waves around 6 meters high, as well as dry and pleasant weather, with temperatures around 18 degrees Celsius."
"Until 4:30 in the afternoon, 30 surfers, men and women, the best in the world in this big wave surfing discipline, will ride the famous waves of Getxo, in an event open to the public. This is the longest-running international big wave surfing competition on the continent, which began two decades ago," they add.
The event will feature several prominent international and local artists such as Nic Lamb, Russell Bierke, Dominique Charrier, Twiggy Baker, Natxo Gonzalez and Nadia Erostarbe, among others.
