Olympic surfing facts: Teams that have more than twice as many support staff as athletes

Six are competing, but the United States brought 21, 15 of whom are support staff; Brazil is going with 13.

Teams from the United States and Brazil are breaking records at ISA events for the number of support personnel that will be part of the World Surfing Games taking place in Miyazaki, Japan from September 7-15.

The Americans are listed on the ISA website with 21 entrants, of which six are competitors and 15 are either team officials or “support” and the Brazilians have 19 in total, 13 of which are “support” people.

That is, more than twice as many people on each of these teams will not wear a rashguard or touch the water.

The American list identifies former CT, now coach Brett Simpson and the mother of Courtney Conlogue and Tracey Lynne, and between the green and yellow lines are coach Rosaldo Cavalcanti and Filipe Toledo's father, Ricardo, among a huge list of people who are presumed to include family members, personal trainers, assistants and others.

At ISA events, the families and coaches of athletes, if they wish to have access to restricted areas and accompany them, must register and pay an entry fee, which gives them the right to circulate in the same places where the athletes are and to be part of the parade of nations.

At previous ISA events, a well-equipped team traveled with two or three coaches, the usual being the coach and the team manager.

There were years when Chavez's Venezuela set the tone for accompanying personnel, with masseurs and physiotherapists. Those years are long gone.
