This is the surfing qualification process for Santiago 2023

All the keys to take into account in determining the 88 surfers, longboarders and SUPers who will participate in the second largest multi-sport event in the world

Three tests will qualify surfing in Santiago 2023: The ISA ones by division, the PASA one and the ALAS tour, the hierarchical order to determine who goes or not is that, ISA first, PASA second, ALAS third, PASA reported today.

ISA World SUP and Paddleboard Championship 2022 (28 November – 6 December 2022)
SUP Races – 4 men and 4 women
SUP Surf – 4 men and 4 women

ISA World Surfing Games 2023 (El Salvador)
Shortboard – 5 men and 5 women

ISA World Longboard Championship 2023 (date and venue to be confirmed)
Longboard – 4 men and 4 women

PASA Surfing Games 2023 (ranking by division)
Men's Shortboard (8) eight spots.
Women's Shortboard (8) eight spots.
SUP Surf men (4) four places.
SUP Surf women (4) four places.
SUP Race men (5) five places.
SUP Race women (5) five places.
Longboard men (4) four places.
Longboard women (4) four spots

ALAS Pro Tour 2022
Shortboard – 1 man and 1 woman

The total number of athletes who will compete in: Shortboard, Longboard and SUP (race and surf) will be 88 (44 per gender).

Shortboard will have 32 (16 per gender)

Longboard will have 18 (9 per gender)

SUP Surf will have 18 (9 per gender)

SUP race will have 20 (10 per gender)

The maximum number of athletes from the same country that can be present in Santiago 2023 will be 10: Two men's shortboards, two women's shortboards, one male longboarder, one female longboarder, 1 male SUP surfer, 1 female SUP surfer, one male SUP racer and one female SUP racer.

To be eligible:
To qualify for the 2023 Pan American Surfing Games: Shortboarders must be in the top 20 and the rest of the categories in the top 16.

To qualify through the ALAS tour, the surfer must be placed in the top 16.

If a position is not filled through these two tests, it will go to the ranking of the 2023 World Surfing Games.

It is worth noting that each National Olympic Committee "validates" each qualified athlete to go or not after carrying out its quality assessment. It happened for Lima 2019 that there were athletes who qualified but because their NOC considered that they had no chance of a medal, they were denied their participation (read here).
