This is what it's like to be on Pipe's second reef, according to Nathan Florence

“You think, ‘What the hell am I doing here?’,” says the specialist.

Riding a wave on Pipe's second reef, positioning yourself to face the beast as it bites the first reef, getting barreled and emerging gloriously in front of the whole world is one of the dreams of many surfers on the planet, but it doesn't seem to be so appealing according to Nathan Florence.

The Hawaiian, in an interview with Stab, said that in his experience it doesn't seem like a very efficient activity, the second reef isn't very consistent and you have to be patient.

He put it this way: “I’ll say that the few times I’ve paddled out there, you’re just sitting around waiting and all you hear are screams and yells, and you see every wave at Backdoor and every wave at Pipe snorting from inside while you just keep waiting. You’re thinking, ‘What the hell am I doing here?’ So, with the way I surf now, I like to stay pretty active during the session.”

Florence reflected that if you're a visiting surfer, it seems like a good bet to go to the second reef because if you're not going to catch anything, it's better to go for that place where there are fewer people and you can catch a good one.

The thing is, you might get a scolding from some local who also wanted to go on it, even though they were further down the list.
