This was the historic ALAS event of 2012 that took place in Montoya
The only Uruguayan returning this week after 14 years; review all the results and all the series from that event
Special coverage presented by Crown Uruguay y El Nido
The 2012 ALAS event was the only one in Uruguay's history; it took place between January 2nd and 7th in the small waves of Montoya, and 14 years had to pass before it was repeated, before history was made again and the tour returned to the country's coasts.
ALAS shared the documents from that event with DUKE. The first thing worth mentioning is that with over 100 surfers from 13 countries, this year's ALAS has almost doubled the attendance of the 2012 event.
The other thing is that, strangely, there were no women's categories at that event.
The competitors were distributed as follows:
Eight longboarders
18 juniors
31 open
The event had the following results:
Open men
1st: Luisma Iturria (URU)
2nd: Joaquín del Castillo (PER)
3rd places: Giuliano Arreyes (ARG) and Martín Passeri (ARG)
Junior
1nd: Joaquín del Castillo (PER)
2nd: Lucas Madrid (URU)
3rd: Sebastián Olarte (URU)
4th: Juan Pablo Fernández (URU)
Longboard
1st: Martín Pérez (ARG)
2nd: Ronald Reyes (VEN)
3rd: Armando Colucci (VEN)
4th: Federico Goñi (ARG)
The event was key in making it possible for the only time in history to have two Uruguayan champions in the same year in two categories of the ALAS tour: Iturria won in the Open and Lucas Madrid in the Junior.
As life takes unexpected turns, this year's ALAS will have both competitors in the Men's Open and Madrid doing a double role, wearing lycra but also organizing the tournament.
