This year's Pan American Surfing Championship will use a different system for team ranking
For the qualification to Lima 2019, only the Open men and Open women categories will be added.
The ranking that will be taken into account for the team classification for the Lima 2019 Pan American Games will only consider the open categories (open men and open women) and not the rest of the disciplines as has always been the case, the president of the Pan American Surfing Association, Karín Sierralta, informed DUKE.
“In communication with the ISA technical committee, we considered that, following the principle of equity, if the qualifier (for Lima 2019) is only for shortboard, it seemed fair to us that only shortboard be considered in the ranking,” Sierralta explained to DUKE.
In this way, SUP Race, SUP Surf and Longboard will be left out of the final ranking that will be used to define the two countries plus Peru that will take four athletes to Lima 2019.
This does not mean that the general ranking will not be used to determine the champion nation in general terms of the Pan American Games. This is something that the organization has not yet reported.
According to Lima 2019 qualification criteria (read it here), the first two nations in the team ranking will each place two open men and two open women in the first surfing event at the Pan American Games.
