Uruguay welcomed winter with open arms

After weeks of record amounts of rain, a certain sandbank magically settled itself and a handful of locals enjoyed an epic day of waves

One of the worst autumns in recent years in Uruguay officially came to an end yesterday with one of the best days of waves so far this year, and for some, in this particular place it was one of the best days in several years.

Winter has never been so welcome in Uruguay as it was yesterday, Friday, June 21, especially in this place where the record amount of rain left the perfect sandbank, forming wide and solid left and right tubes.

Luisma Iturria himself, who recently rode tubes in northern Chile, told DUKE: "It was impressive, it's been a long time since I've ridden like that. Even the locals there said it's been a long time since I've ridden like that. There were tubes standing still... On one backside, I saw the size of the tube on the left, I let go of the rail and rode without hands in there."

"I saw Pupi, Grillo, Manuel Lázaro, Guzmán Andrioli and Josepe Pereira hitting home runs. It was impressive. But like everything in Uruguay, the good times didn't last long and at some point they stopped hitting series... But it was one of those epic days," concluded Iturria.

The photographer of the session, Luis Pereira Costa (who went surfing first because he couldn't resist), said: “The waves didn't stop all day, some of them went away on their own, with a lot of people at the peak. From what I heard in the water, it hadn't been like this for 10 years. Tubes with various sections and waves for everyone. There were perfect lefts but faster. I surfed first and then I took the photos, I couldn't hold back.”

"It was amazing, it's been a long time since I've run like that. Even the locals said it's been a long time since I've gone out like that. There were tubes that were stopped," said Iturria, who has a good amount of time inside the tubes. All the photos: Luis Pereira Costa

When he's not filming movies, or taking care of the oceans with Parley, Pupi Berger is in the water. Yesterday, according to Iturria himself, he got a few good ones. In the photo, one of the girls who entered yesterday but who gave a good ride in the barrel.

"El Grillo is off the charts. The level he has stands out, you can see it from a mile away," said the photographer during the session about the La Paloma venue. "He hit some shots that completely disappeared, way down in the background and came out of nowhere. Deep, deep and long."
Young talent from La Paloma, Gastón Briceño, returned home with his share of tubes guaranteed.
