The Uruguayan Olympic Committee has recognized the Uruguayan Surfing Union as an active affiliate member of the organization, the latter institution reported on its website.

A letter signed by the IOC president, who is also an Olympic member and president of the international swimming federation, Julio Maglione, gave the news to President Federico Deal.

The head of the Uruguayan federation said: “It means being in a new world where sport is represented and respected. We hope that together with the committee we can navigate this path as best as possible,” said Deal.

He added that it took two years of negotiations, “there were several requirements and luckily we were able to comply with everything requested by the committee.”

He concluded by saying that with this we can expect “good participation” from Uruguay in the Olympic cycle events such as the Beach Games, Pan American Games and hopefully an Olympic participation in the future, which is the goal set today, in the 2024 Olympics.”

The Uruguayan professional tour is about to complete its fourth of six stages, and is currently on yellow alert waiting for waves to host the Rip Curl Pro somewhere on the coast of Maldonado.
