Different versions of Uruguayan news programs on Channel 10 and 12 indicated that six or 28 surfers were fined today for surfing on the coast of La Paloma, Rocha, and could even be cited by the Prosecutor's Office, said the mayor of that department, Flavia Coelho.

The fine is imposed on the person, the authority said, and the news reports indicated that it is between 100 and 150 dollars.

According to Coelho, the foul occurred because the surfer crossed a line indicating that the beach was closed.

Holy Week or Tourist Week in Uruguay began with one of the best days of waves in recent weeks, with solid waves breaking at two meters in some places, especially La Pedrera.

In this regard, the legendary Uruguayan surfer, Luisma Iturria, sent a message on his Instagram inviting people not to go into the water, not to be selfish and to beat the virus by staying at home: “We have a spectacular day of waves but we can go without surfing, we can spend days and we have to take it seriously and we must not be selfish; (why) if one can, the other can't,” he said.

In Uruguay, the Covid-19 quarantine is not mandatory; there are no classes and everyone is asked to stay at home, but the commitment depends on each person.

Before the start of Holy Week, Uruguayan authorities urged Uruguayans not to travel around the country, and also announced that gatherings in rivers, lakes or oceans would be discouraged.
