Uruguayan tubes with Santi Medeiro

Having arrived from Puerto Escondido to one of the best summers in recent years in Uruguay was very good for the surfer from Punta del Este

Santi Medeiro arrived a couple of months ago from Puerto Escondido, where he spent the holidays and a few months sinking tubes in the off-season of one of the best beach breaks in the world.

He came home to one of the best summers in history. Yesterday's was just one more of the many he has been scoring.

With a powerful southeast swell, somewhere along the coast, he took this gem. He says it was not the best of the day but it was one of four tubes that made the session special after having also tried to do tow-ats.

“It was great!” he said. “We got to the spot early and it wasn’t one of those days when you arrive and say: “What a pleasure!” Quite the opposite… It was closing quickly. We did a couple of waves with tow-atts, got some good tubes, but at one point it got good and there I was in the water, totally alone and with two friends, Seba and Luli, filming outside.

“The kids were looking for bombs on the jet ski about 500 meters away... And then a good one came in, a square tube that gave me the feeling of Skeleton Bay for a second (laughs). But the video was cut off because we were filming tow in and the kids were on another peak further away.

After that, I ran out because I couldn’t row back and on the way Seba waved to me: “Go back there!” And so it was, I went about 400 meters further to the right so I could get in and the current would take me right in front of where the peak was and while I was still there fighting, the one from the video came in and got out!” he celebrated.

Filmmaker Sebastián Calandra told DUKE: "I've rarely seen conditions like those that day in Uruguay. The waves were big and the current very strong, but Santi was up to the task. Without a doubt, a day to remember!"
