Leandro Usuna and Ornella Pellizzari from Argentina, Gustavo Dvorquez and Lorena Fica from Chile, Dominic Barona from Ecuador and Daniella Rosas from Peru have secured their place in the quarterfinals of the Rip Curl Pro Argentina, which today celebrated its second day in waves of half to one meter consisting of Biology.
The men's round 3 series are still to be decided, with Chile's Roberto Araki and Peru's Lucca Mesinas seeded into two separate series, each facing three Brazilians. Both of their matches were to have taken place but a technical problem prevented this and forced the championship to be cut short.
As things have been going, Brazil has once again taken control of the tournament, with 20 surfers remaining, 12 of whom are from that country.
Local favorite Lele Usuna, who carries the benefits and pressure of being local, kept his surfing up to par and managed to get through the two heats he surfed today (one in second and the other in first) quite comfortably.
Tomorrow, the Argentine will go for the first historic victory of an Argentine at home and to end a streak that has seen six Brazilians win in the men's category.
The other one who surprised by surfing very well was the Chilean Gustavo Dvorquez, who is 18 years old and was not afraid to execute waves that received scores of and above seven to pass his heats beating the always tough Brazilian competitors.
Among the women, the Brazilians had the best scores of the day, with Tainá Hinckel scoring 12,75. But Mimi Barona, Daniella Rosas, Ornella Pellizzari and Lorena Fica were not far behind, all combining for more than nine points.
Tomorrow, Barona will go for a historic third consecutive tournament (she won here in 2017 and 2018). While Ornella Pellizzari will be trying to become the first Argentine surfer, male or female, to win the QS on her home turf.
WSL South America director Roberto Perdigao hinted that the tournament could take place tomorrow at the Yacht but no one has confirmed this.
These are the series that remain to be played to conclude the championship:
