Vans will not be a sponsor of the US Open this year
The brand decided to prioritize other events outside the WSL sphere such as the Pipe Masters and the Duct Tape Invitational
Californian brand Vans has decided not to sponsor the US Open of Surfing this year, according to surfing business specialist Shop Eat Surf.
The decision was made because they sought to prioritize other events that the brand already carries out, such as House of Vans, the Vans Showdown and Block Party in skateboarding and the Vans Pipe Masters and Duct Tape Festival in surfing, “among other activations,” they point out.
The aforementioned website reports that the decision was made at the same time that the company made some labor cuts at a time when the brand's sales fell 9% in the last quarter.
Vans' refusal explains why the WSL has been slow to release its Challenger Series schedule, which was expected to be ready in November 2022.
The US Open is one of the stages of this circuit and has been one of the most traditional events in world surfing.
