Editorial: WSL Brazil and the mistake of not following regional rankings

He misses out on what he loves: the show, the comments, and the likes, but mainly he fails the athletes by not informing them and honoring their sacrifice and glory.

There is something that the WSL, the global, the CT, the CS and all the highest levels of world surfing understood: Generating expectation about a big event and following it leads to more followers, more excitement, more show and therefore more fans.

Just yesterday they announced a 39% increase in audience numbers year-over-year. Undoubtedly, having a dedicated press team, data specialist, and analyst has been instrumental in this success.

In order for events to be exciting series after series, and for there to be daily reportable milestones, there has to be someone with the Excel spreadsheet open, imagining scenarios or simply confirming them.

WSL South America, which is called WSL Latin America but actually represents South America and had a continental account that changed it to WSL Brazil, has taken steps backward in all of this.

And he did it precisely with a CEO, Iván Martinho, who supposedly likes the show, the drama… One of those who resonate well with Erik Logan; they don't know anything about surfing but they do know how to generate a show.

Well, Ivan, you're messing things up. Or they're messing you up. Or you really messed up when you fired Joao Carvalho, who was telling you, series by series, what this meant.

In true showmanship fashion, four players were confirmed today at the Floripam QS. Weslley Dantas was already the champion and, obviously, qualified before the tournament even started.

And what about WSL Latin America, South America, Brazil? They haven't made anything official.

But what's worse is not that they've missed the party and the opportunity, which they love, to generate more views, likes and comments, but that they've failed in their duty to keep followers informed and above all the surfers themselves.

I've been searching nonstop. There's nothing online about this. WSL Brazil has a story about an açaí event and its 50th anniversary celebrations. WSL QS has alerts that the event is live. WSL itself obviously has nothing.

The WSL website looks like this:

It's sad because the competition is worthy of honoring, but it's sad that they're so clueless that they fail in their own mission to put on a show and generate drama and "viral" moments... Which these fools love.

They're missing out, all because they can't be bothered to sit someone down and do calculations with an Excel spreadsheet. Something so simple would benefit both worlds: athletes who dedicate their lives to the sport and the fans, who do the same.
