WSL on possible penalties for Brazilians: “Nothing has been decided at this time”

“It will be handled internally,” said the executive vice president of the institution.

“Nothing has been decided at this time,” said the organization’s executive vice president, Graham Stapelberg, today at a press conference for the Surf City El Salvador Pro, regarding whether there will be a penalty for the Brazilian surfers who publicly denounced unfair judging at the Surf Ranch event 10 days ago.

Asked by DUKE about the issue, Stapelberg began by saying that it is an internal matter. He added: “There will always be differences of opinion in judging, it is not a perfect science, and everyone has different voices on the issue.”

Asked whether there would be a fine and whether it would be made public, he said it would be handled internally.

WSL CEO Erik Logan, in his letter to the league community, said the surfers' actions were a “breach of league policy,” without making it clear whether there would be a penalty or not.

Asked by DUKE, Gabriel Medina said he had no idea whether he had been penalized or not.

After the WSL event ended at Slater's pool, first Medina and then Filipe Toledo and Italo Ferreira posted on their social networks their disagreement with the judging.

This sparked an exchange of statements and conversations on social media, but also threats, including death threats to surfers and staff.
