"We did a great job doing nothing": The new video for Chapter 11

Dane Reynolds and friends in another good installment from one of the best surfing audiovisual producers today

“Matt and I were surfing at Emma Wood, if you want to call it that… Does anyone else feel like California has sunk into a deep, dark black hole that won’t allow decent waves to come ashore?”

Anyway, we were just talking about how impressive it is that one of our dear friends got to where he is in life without doing anything. It's very impressive. It takes a certain amount of skill to become an adult skating, without ever putting in the effort or dedicating your time and energy to a specific career, but somehow you come out on top time and time again.

“Did a great job of doing nothing” stuck. It’s used to describe a daily humiliation you can barely call exercise, or a day at the store when nothing works, ruining screens, staining clothes, no customers, unwanted calls, broken printer… Those moments when you just seem to be spinning your wheels.

I found a stack of black and white prints on the swap meet taken by a racing enthusiast. One of them was of a Buick Regal spinning its wheels before a race and it clicked. That’s the name of the film. “We did a great job of doing nothing,” is how Dane Reynolds describes his new film.
