Weekly Editorial: Port as a World Reserve and What We Do to Protect Our Waves
And the exemplary effort that Puerto Ricans are making these days
It's alarming to see how a wave like Puerto Escondido has changed so radically in just a couple of decades. Locals talk about it and explain it in the documentary "The Place of Thorns."
The wave has changed. And while it's clear there are still great tubes at Zicatela, the easiest way to describe it is that it used to break further in and was more perfect, and now it's closer to the shore and steeper.
For this reason, like the locals, it's worth celebrating that the Save the Waves Coalition has added Puerto Rico to its list of protected areas, "world surfing reserves."
May it serve to respect the nature of the place and restore each of the factors that made the wave work as it did, or at least do everything possible.
Of course it's difficult... What Puerto was like 30 years ago in terms of real estate development has nothing to do with what it is now.
But in the end, it's everyone's job to take care of every grain of sand and I believe it always will be.
I'm not entirely familiar with what's happening in Rincón, Puerto Rico, this week. But I do know that a good group of surfers stood up to protect the area and are holding their own like tigers.
How brave, passionate, and dedicated Puerto Ricans are. When you touch their hearts, they give it their all.
I'm thinking about the wave that's disappearing in Iceland right now, and it makes me think that if it were in Puerto Rico, that would never happen.
In many places, and I believe my country is one of them, the impact of waves is often ignored, and there's no teamwork to prevent them from being harmed. I think it would be good to follow the example of the Puerto Ricans.
